One of today’s new trends is to play with your food.  More specifically, one of today’s new trends is to slather your food on your face.  This isn’t a joke.  It’s taking natural foods from our kitchen and utilizing them as topical treatments to keep our skin looking healthy and pretty.  Some of the best foods to use include: 

 Honey!  Don’t purchase honey from the store; instead - find some locally produced, raw honey that has not yet been pasteurized.  This type of unprocessed honey has antimicrobial and antibacterial properties, which is great for keeping skin clean and clear from blemishes and acne.  In World War II, honey was used on open wounds to keep it clear from infection.  It is also a natural humectant, which seals in moisture and keeps your skin hydrated. 

  1.   Both egg yolks and egg whites are great for your skin.  Egg yolks have high levels of vitamin A, which helps the skin repair itself.  It also contains lecithin, which softens skin.  Egg whites contain over 40 proteins, as well as lots of water, and can be used to help tighten the skin. 

Lemons.  Or really any citrus fruits, including strawberries, oranges and kiwi.  Citrus fruits help clear extra oil from the skin, while at the same time brightening the skin tone.  The acidity in citrus fruits works as an exfoliant that also helps the cells to regenerate.  Make sure to moisturize after using foods high in acid on your face to replace the oil that has been stripped from the skin. 

Milk.  Or Yogurt. Milk products contain lactic acid.  Like the acidity in lemons, this acid works as a great exfoliant.  However, it’s also very high in B-vitamins which provide additional antioxidant benefits for the skin.  Supposedly, Cleopatra used milk to keep her skin looking supple, clean and young.  For an added bonus, once a week, add in a little ground nutmeg to your milk to give yourself a microdermabrasion. 

Oatmeal.  Grind some oatmeal into a fine powder for a great anti-inflammatory skin treatment. Oatmeal reduces redness and protects the skin from harmful UV rays.  It has long been found to be an effective acne treatment.

Sugar: Sugar is a great exfoliant and helps you get rid of the dry skin patches.  Mix with a little olive oil for best overall results. 

Oils:  The oil cleansing method is quickly becoming a must-do for problem skin.  As strange as it sounds, it’s even recommended for oily skin.  The oil cleansing method (OCM) is based upon the concept that oil attracts oil and requires that castor oil become the basis for cleaning.  By using castor oil on the skin, you are pulling the nasty hard oil your skin produced away from your skin and replacing with good healthy oil that repairs your skin. To get the most benefit, castor oil should be mixed with another oil. 

  • For oily skin, use sunflower or sweet almond oil.
  • For dry skin, use avocado or apricot kernel oil
  • For normal skin, use grapeseed or jojoba oil.
  • For skin prone to acne, use sunflower or hazelnut oil
